In individual difference research within the psychological sciences many observations are collected from participants and their associations are explored. Traditionally latent variable modeling has been the prominent statistical strategy to explain associations amongst several observations; whereby several unobserved factors or latent variables are described as the statistical “cause” of the underlying correlations. Psychometric network modeling is a statistical modeling technique that describes the direct association amongst multiple observed variables using estimated partial correlations without relying on these unobserved factors. The goal of this presentation is to introduce these statistical techniques and provide information about their advantages and disadvantages, but ultimately to demonstrate that psychometric network modeling is a complimentary technique to traditional latent variable models for areas like Cognitive Psychology and Psychometrics.
